# Pi

> Use Pi for your Coordinator and workers.

## Setup

Install [Pi](https://pi.dev/docs/latest/quickstart) 1.1 or newer and configure a provider on the machine running Flowfield. Flowfield uses the installed `pi` command directly.

In **Settings → Harnesses**, keep detected paths or override the executable and configuration directory. Accounts stay in Pi. See [shared setup](/agents/overview).

## Models and access

Models and thinking levels come directly from Pi, including provider names and custom model definitions. The list reflects Pi’s available catalog; actual access depends on the provider account. Selecting a model leaves Pi’s saved defaults unchanged. Sign-in is managed by Pi per provider.

If no models appear, configure a provider in Pi on the service host, then choose **Refresh models** in Flowfield.

Pi tools use **Full access**, without built-in per-tool approvals or a sandbox. Flowfield still requires exact approval before delivering worker code.

Choose Coordinator and workspace worker defaults independently; task **Agent settings** can override the next attempt. See [worker setup](/worker-setup).

## Commands

The Coordinator supports `/compact`, `/status`, `/mcp` and `/skills`. Compaction uses Pi’s native RPC control. Status shows model/thinking settings, MCP uses Pi’s connection inventory, and skills lists native skill commands. Terminal-only commands are not exposed.

## Sessions and Stop

Unchanged settings resume the native Coordinator session. Stop clears queued work, aborts native execution and closes the session, including extension shutdown hooks. Extensions must honor Pi’s cancellation and cleanup contracts; arbitrary detached services are outside managed cleanup.

See [Coordinator recovery](/coordinator#stop-and-continue-later) for saved history, fresh sessions and uncertain cleanup.

## Native customization

Pi loads installed extensions, custom tools and native MCP settings, respecting its saved project-trust decisions. The Flowfield extension loads automatically alongside them. Extension confirmations appear in Flowfield; terminal widgets and free-text extension dialogs require Pi’s terminal interface. Other extension dialogs are cancelled with a visible notice. Extension shutdown failures retain uncertain ownership for recovery.

## Standalone conversation

Use the [shared connection steps](/agents/overview#standalone-conversations) with `pi`:

```sh theme={null}
flowfield integration connect pi
```
